THE AZURE ESSENCE WITH THE GIFT OF GUAIAZULENE
This luminous sapphire substance is the result of a meticulous 96-hour hydrodistillation of both the bark and heartwood of the Australian Blue Cypress tree (Callitris columellaris), wild-harvested in the rugged outback. This extra special essence is created in partnership with the Tiwi people of Melville and Bathurst Islands. Known natively as Karnitirrikani, the Tiwi have treasured this resilient evergreen conifer for millennia, carving its dense, aromatic wood into ceremonial art, spears, and musical instruments, while turning its resinous sap and bark decoctions into soothing balms to calm skin in the intense elements of the outback.
While classic Mediterranean Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) offers crisp, elevated top notes rich in airy monoterpenes of alpha-pinene, Australian Blue Cypress hails from ancient Gondwanan roots and belongs to a phytochemical class all its own. Though both trees are evergreen conifers of the Cupressaceae family, Blue Cypress is defined by dense, 15-carbon sesquiterpene alcohols (guaiol, bulnesol, gamma-eudesmol) and specialized sesquiterpene lactones (dihydrocolumellarin). Instead of the light, needle-fresh liquid of classic Cypress, slow steam distillation of the bark and heartwood yields an unctuous nectar with a slow-flowing viscosity akin to Sandalwood and Cedarwood. This new blue essence entered clinical aromatherapy in the late 20th century when pioneering Australian distillers and renowned French doctors, including Daniel Pénoël and Pierre Franchomme, studied its unique sesquiterpenoid profile and calming azure chromophores.
Glowing with an opulent blue hue gifted by naturally occurring guaiazulene, a rare dual-ringed sesquiterpene structurally parallel to the chamazulene found in Blue Tansy, Yarrow, and German Chamomile, Blue Cypress is a uniquely serene substance. Guaiazulene is the blue-hued antidote to the appearance of redness, comforting to any complexion and casting a fortifying moisture shield over dry or weather-worn skin. With its smooth, woody scent layered with sweet balsamic undertones, Blue Cypress bridges the restorative depth of an outback apothecary remedy with the exquisite art of fine perfumery.
"Used for thousands of years by the Australian aboriginal people for personal care and household applications, this rare aqua colored essential oil native to the Northern Territory of Australia was selected as the essence of the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics. Blue Cypress Oil's sweet woody fragrance has smoothing and moisturizing skin benefits. The products range from sports to personal body care, cosmetics and perfumery."

“I am in love with this beautiful oil. I don't know what possessed me to pick it out amongst all the others, but I am overjoyed that I did. I was initially going to use it to skin brush with... but alas! I realized it was a thicker oil and would not be the best for my skin brush. What to do? I massaged it into my skin and immediately felt uplifted. My skin also felt replenished in a way that no other essential oil has achieved. Not that I am picking favorites- it would be impossible to choose!- but blue cypress really is a gem of an oil, that which is emotionally grounding, calming and reassuring. With an exquisite resinous, honey-like aroma and a divine royal blue hue, you will be more than delighted to flourish in this wood oil.” — Annie

The Guaiazulene Gift of Blue Cypress Essential Oil’s Phytochemistry
The unctuous, slow-gliding viscosity of Blue Cypress essential oil (Callitris intratropica) is directly reflected in its remarkable sesquiterpenol-rich molecular architecture. Differing from classic conifer cypress distillates, which are lighter, fast-evaporating, and abundant in monoterpenes, gas chromatography reveals a dense substance anchored by crystalline sesquiterpene alcohols. High-molecular-weight alcohols like guaiol (12%) and bulnesol (10%) naturally form solid, crystalline matrices rather than thin liquids, giving the raw oil its honey-like, unctuous texture. Particularly special are the eudesmols, a rare botanical triad of structural isomers consisting of gamma-eudesmol (7%) and a coeluting pool of alpha- and beta-eudesmols (nearly 11%). Eudesmols are renowned in phytochemistry for their exceptional fixative tenure and ability to form a protective, moisture-locking veil over dry or weather-worn skin. Working in tandem with the rare sesquiterpene lactone dihydrocolumellarin (13%), this heavy, resinous matrix accounts for the oil's velvety sandalwood-like texture and sweet balsamic aroma.
Its captivating blue hue and gentle skin-soothing efficacy stem from a synergy of chromophoric azulenes, notably guaiazulene and chamazulene. Though present in trace amounts, these twin-ringed sesquiterpenes act as gentle botanical pacifiers that visibly quench and soothe the appearance of reactive skin. This azure shield is further enriched by specialized lactones like callitrin and columellarin, alongside grounding sesquiterpenes such as beta-selinene and alpha-selinene, which impart intricate forest-floor undertones and support the oil’s natural purifying presence.
Verified by laboratory analysis to contain zero synthetic adulterants, contaminants, or diluents, this outback essence bridges flourishing phytochemistry with fine perfumery and mind-body care. Because sesquiterpenes are heavy, 15-carbon molecules, their large molecular size causes them to evaporate slowly off the skin and linger on olfactory pathways. Upon inhalation, these dense sesquiterpene structures interact with olfactory receptors to send sustained, steadying signals directly to the limbic system. Whether applied in a restorative skin serum, a natural deodorant or inhaled to ground scattered thoughts, the rare phytochemical signature of Blue Cypress offers a pure, fragrant forcefield straight from the Australian wilderness.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How does Australian Blue Cypress differ from classic Mediterranean Cypress?
While both are stately evergreen conifers in the Cupressaceae family, they hail from entirely different genera, continents, and phytochemical classes. Classic Mediterranean Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) is distilled from green needles, yielding a light liquid rich in volatile monoterpenes like alpha-pinene that deliver crisp, elevated top notes. In contrast, Australian Blue Cypress (Callitris intratropica) is slow-distilled from the bark and heartwood, yielding an unctuous, slow-flowing sapphire nectar defined by dense 15-carbon sesquiterpenes, crystalline sesquiterpenols (guaiol, eudesmols, bulnesol), and chromophoric blue guaiazulene. This distinct chemistry offers a honeyed, balsamic-woody scent profile akin to Sandalwood's long-lost outback cousin.
What is the traditional history of Blue Cypress, and when was it first distilled?
Long before modern distillation, the Tiwi people and Northern Territory Aboriginal communities crafted traditional topical remedies directly from the living tree. They pounded the resinous inner bark and wood, steeping it in hot water for soothing skin washes, or blending wood ash and crushed bark into animal fats to formulate protective salves against the intense outback sun and insects. They also burned the aromatic heartwood in smudges to cleanse the air and ease breathing.
The craft of steam distilling of Callitris intratropica emerged in Northern Australia during the late 1980s and early 1990s, when Australian distiller Vince Collins pioneered and patented a long, 96-hour steam co-distillation of the heartwood together with the bark. He discovered that as the heartwood essential oil vapors contact compounds within the bark during steam extraction, a natural catalytic reaction occurs, transforming colorless guaiol into vibrant, sapphire-blue guaiazulene. The therapeutic potential of this sesquiterpene-rich distillate was soon championed in European clinical aromatherapy by Pierre Franchomme and Dr. Daniel Pénoël. Dr. Kurt Schnaubelt then brought the research to North America through his landmark Pacific Institute of Aromatherapy conferences. It was at this very conference, where Nadine was a speaker, that she first encountered the extraordinary blue elixir and brought it home to offer at her Osmosis store in 1994.
Why is the oil blue, and why is it so thick?
The vibrant sapphire color comes from guaiazulene, a rare bicyclic sesquiterpene alchemically formed during the slow, low-pressure steam distillation of the tree's bark and heartwood. Heat and steam transform the wood's natural, colorless guaiol precursors into a blue chromophore, a specialized, light-absorbing molecular structure that reflects an opulent azure pigment. Its dense, unctuous viscosity, similar to Sandalwood or Vetiver, is driven by a high concentration of heavy sesquiterpene alcohols (guaiol and eudesmols) that intertwine to form viscous, moisture-locking matrices on the skin.
Can Blue Cypress Essential Oil be applied neat to the skin?
Yes. Due to its high concentration of soothing guaiazulene and heavy sesquiterpenes, Blue Cypress is exceptionally gentle on delicate skin and is an effective natural deodorant. You can dab a single drop neat onto pulse points, underarms, or blemish spots, or dilute 3–5 drops into a facial oil or Jojoba base for an occlusive, restorative night serum.
How does Blue Cypress perform in perfume and scent blending?
It is a pleasure to blend with. Thanks to heavy sesquiterpenes that evaporate very slowly off the skin, Blue Cypress acts as a natural botanical fixative and tenacious base note. It anchors fleeting citrus top notes, rounds out sharp herbaceous accents, and provides a velvety, balsam-woody depth to floral essences like Neroli, Jasmine, and Ylang.
